The song is written about those situations in which after trying so hard to avoid something, you finally accept that you have to deal with it, no matter how painful it might be. Hence the only way out is down...sometimes you just have to keep digging, yah know? For me this was the case when I finally came to terms with being trans and that all my negative feelings towards myself were not going to go away until I addressed that.
